Football Glossary On 10/06/06 by ed Talisman - A key player (usually attacking) with a big presence on the pitch who inspires the team
Agricultural ball - A long hoofed clearance from the defence
Industrious player - A player who covers a lot of ground on the pitch
Defensive rock - A physical defender who doesn't usually allow attackers past
Piledriver - A powerful shot
Nutmeg - A bit of skill which fools and opposing player - usually a flick through the legs
Cruyff Turn - Named after Johan Cruyff's inside step back heel trick
Scissor Kick - A jumping sideways volley
Bicycle Kick - An overhead kick
Half-volley - Striking the ball immediately after it bounces
Volley - Kicking the ball in the air
Sweeper - A roaming player who usually plays in the defence (also known as Libero)
Striker - The most attacking player
Forward - Similar to striker but may play wide
Winger - A player who plays forward on the wings
Midfield - Plays across the middle of the pitch
Defender - Plays at the back
Full Back - Plays at the back in a wide position - usually defend against wingers
Centre Back - Plays at the back in a central position - usually defend against strikers
Goalkeeper - Plays in goal and the only player who can use his hands (in his area)
Dummy - Fooling a player into thinking you are going to do something that you're not
Man-marking - A defensive tactic. A defender will stay close to an attacker to prevent him playing
Poacher - A prolific striker
Mexican wave - Where spectators stand up in sequence in a stadium and create a wave effect
Underdog - A team who aren't expected to win in a match
Shimmy - Trying to make the defender think you're going one way and go to other without touching the ball |
