Pro Evolution 6 Review On 26/10/06 by ed Right, finally got my hands on PES6 - a day before release - some shops decided to sell early for some reason.
First things first, the gameplay hasn't been altered much from PES5 - from what I've played so far. The passing is a little slicker and quick short passing seems to be one of the better attacking options, along with attacking full-backs. My first goal was from a cross and a firm planted header running in. In summary for the surface scratch:
General Play
- Looping through-balls seem to be miles more difficult to pull off
- Players hold the ball better and an muscle-out players when sprinting down the flanks. Dependent on skill levels by the looks of it
- Some keepers are laughably poor - real butter fingers on display here!
- More crowd chants eg. You can hear the England fans shouting 'Rooooney'
- National stadia have adverts of that country
- Dribbling is more fruitful that PES5. Players can break tackles and keep running.
- Player movement off the ball is much better
- There are some neat extra like a quick free-kick by pressing L1+R1
- Man of the Match awards added
Online Play (PS2)
- First attempt - connection to server lost. It's not connecting at the moment - maybe they're updating it
- OK got on a few minutes later. It's going to take some time for me to get used to this - the XBox Live for PES5 was much more simplified. There's a tournament cup that you can enter which kicks off at certain times - you've got to pick 3 teams that up to 11 stars or something? Updates later.
So overall first impressions are the fundamentals of the game-play haven't been changed much at all. Shooting seems to be a little more crisp and so does the passing. Dribbling down the flanks is like the old PES4 - can be a useful if you have fast players. Quick one-touch passing is good - better than PES5 - you're less likely to skew a pass to the opposition. I've only played the International Cup with England at the moment (got knocked in the 2nd on penalties - I should have known), so I'll no doubt un-earth more new stuff.
